Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar was born on April 7, 1920, in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his music training in 1944 and joined the Indian People's Theatre Association in Mumbai for whom he composed music for ballets in 1945 and 1946. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1967, the Padma Vibhushan in 1981 and Bharat Ratna in 1999.
